Echoes Hub Newsletter 2007 - Volume III - Edition I - 02/24/2007

Sometime late last Fall, I approached Marooned with an idea of Hub contest prizes, should we ever decide to run a contest. Through the years, I have traded for bootleg LPs, acquiring many in the process. I ended up with duplicates of some because I had no reason to pass up on any vinyl anybody was willing to part with. I actually ended up with three copies of two particular bootlegs - The Wall Feb. 28, 1980 and Tongue Tied And Twisted Nov. 26, 1987.

Rather than keep three copies for myself, I figured somebody else might also enjoy owning one of the them so a contest was born.

Several more ideas were then discussed and just a few days before Christmas, the Art Creation idea came up and it was decided to run the contest after the Holidays. On Jan. 2, 2007, it was announced in main chat that we were running the contest with bootleg LPs as 1st and 2nd prize. The idea was to create cover art for 1 of 3 shows:

     1. Pink Floyd 1971-10-17 Convention Hall, Community Concourse, San Diego, CA fixed
     2. Pink Floyd 1972-03-13 Nakajima Sports Center, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
     3. Pink Floyd 1977-07-04 Madison Square Garden' New York City, New York.

Hub members had until Feb. 1st to create art and send it along to me, where I stored them on my hard drive. A few entries came in quickly but it then quieted down. I was hoping the contest wouldn't end up between just 2 or 3 members. As the deadline approached and talk in main chat picked up on the contest, more and more entries came in. We finally ended up with 12. Interestingly enough, 6 designs were for the 1972 show and the remaining 6 entries were for the 1977 show - none for the 1971 show.

On Feb. 1st, I added the 12 art folders (without names, only numbers) to my shares for people to download and view. They were also added to the hub website for quicker viewing.

The voting system was as follows:

     1st choice = 3 points
     2nd choice - 2 points
     3rd choice = 1 point.

Votes were Private Messaged (PM) to me where I stored them on the hard drive, along with an excel sheet where I could quickly add up the totals, when needed. Some people had a hard time narrowing it down to 3 choices, some could not come up with 3. Two covers quickly became favorites, those of Black_Holes and JuniorBubba. At times, they were virtually tied, at other times, each took off with a commanding lead. As the Feb. 13th deadline approached, Black_Holes surged and became the eventual winner.

During the 2 week voting period, I PMd as many hub members as I could, asking if they would view the entries and please vote. Most did, some did not reply and 1 even refused to vote, saying he had no interest in cover art.

On Feb. 14th, the results were made public, along with the names corresponding to the numbered folders. 184 hub members voted (1 member even asked if his girlfriend could vote).

     WINNER: 007 Black_Holes 206 votes
     2nd PLACE: 004 JuniorBubba 190 votes
     3rd PLACE: 002 Viking 163 votes

     THE ENTRANTS:

     001...us50071
     002...Viking
     003...emerson_floyd
     004...JuniorBubba
     005...Marooned

     008...Toshisthinking
     009...groovinpict
     010...wywh1975
     011...Muabdib
     012...SoTane

Black_Holes and JuniorBubba nicely declined the offer of owning the LPs, saying they entered for the enjoyment of the  contest and were willing to pass on the vinyl to the #3 and #4 vote getters. #3 Viking gladly accepted the Wall bootleg and #4 us50071 was thrilled to own his first bootleg LP, the Los Angeles 1987 show.

Black_Holes #1 JuniorBubba #2 Viking #3

Thanks to all for participating in the contest!

A few months back, I came up with the idea about having an OP's pick of the week and thought that it might be cool to have all of the Moderators select their favorite boots and make it a high priority to other traders who also would like to listen to these shows based on our recommendations.

What does this mean? This means you don't have to wait in queue for these shows, just request them from any Moderator. A slot will be auto-granted right away. This will help circulate some of the best shows out there and help our newest members start off with a great list. Hairy-palmed fanboys still clinging to hopes for a full-on Pink Floyd reunion (hey kids, were coming up on two years since Floyd did its Live 8 one-off, time to get a life) were dealt a blow the other day when co-founder Roger Waters announced his plans for a North American tour in which he will perform the complete The Dark Side of the Moon.

Billed as The Dark Side of the MoonThe Return Engagement, the tour kicks off May 18 in Florida and will run for two months, winding up in Toronto.

In a statement issued by the Waters organization, the multi-media event will feature a full evening's worth of
musiccomprised of two sets plus encoresperformed by Roger Waters and full band with state-of-the-art staging, lighting and sound. Set One provides a comprehensive overview of Waters' music including early Pink Floyd material; classic compositions from the masterpiece "The Wall"; beloved pieces from "Animals," "Wish You Were Here," and "The Final Cut"; and songs from Waters' solo tour de force: "Amused To Death." Set Two presents Roger Waters and band performing "The Dark Side Of The Moon," one of the defining works of rock music history, from start-to-finish. Waters performed "The Dark Side Of The Moon" for the first time as a solo artist during his 2006 world tour which included a run of North American concerts last fall. Prior to Waters' 2006 tour, his last live performances of the work took place with Pink Floyd more than 30 years ago.

The Roger Waters concerts utilize elaborate large-scale video projections and theatrical staging to underscore and
accentuate the power of the music which is delivered via a state-of-the-art 360 quadraphonic sound system immersing the audience in a 3-dimensional hyperworld.

The Waters band: Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar and vocals), Snowy White (guitar), Dave Kilminster (guitar and vocals), Jon Carin (keyboards and vocals), Graham Broad (drums), Harry Waters (Hammond organ), Ian Ritchie (saxophone) and Katie Kissoon, PP Arnold and Carol Kenyon (vocals).

No truth to the rumor that the Waters extravaganza will also include a giant screen projection of The Wizard of Oz while he and his band play Dark Side.

Those tour dates:

Latest news is that David Gilmour's 'On An Island' album, is to be in a film. Currently in post-production is the picture tentatively entitled Reign Over Me (inspired by the Who song from Quadrophenia, Love Reign Over Me). Starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, and directed by Mike Binder, the film concerns a man who, after losing his family in the September 11th attack on New York City, bumps into his old college roommate and rekindles their friendship in pursuit of recovery. The producers have included the album cover as set dressing for a scene set in a record store, but there's no current news on whether they are considering adding some music too.

Nick Mason is among rockers showing off his painting prowess for charity. He is among 30 stars who have signed up for the Gibson Guitar Town London campaign which will see them come up with original designs for 10 feet (3 metre) high fibreglass Gibson Les Paul guitars to be displayed around the British capital this summer (07). Each participant will be paired with an artist who will hand paint their ideas. When the campaign ends in September (07), the guitars will go under the hammer to raise money for The Prince's Trust, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Roger Waters is to Play 25 venues in North America this year. For more information, please click the following link ->> http://www.harpmagazine.com/news/detail.cfm?article=10915

Okay so youve logged onto the hub and...ohwaitwhats this tab? Why did it turn red? Wheres the hub gone? Whats happening to me? What do they mean MP3s? Aarggghhhh!!

Has this ever happened to you?

I remember the first time I was kicked on The International Echoes hub; I used every word in the book at the Op who kicked me. (Of course they couldnt see or hear me, I was offline and at home when I got kicked). The more I thought about the reason I was kicked, the anger I felt toward that Op, had turned into anger at myself. I realized that the egregious thing I had done, (had mp3s in my share), was my own doing and in direct violation of the hub rules. I should have been kicked! The Op had done the proper thing and booted me. It doesnt mean they are a horrible person. It just means they are doing what they have been taught to do (keep the hub as clean as possible).

Incidentally, I have not had an MP3 in my possession since that time. When I decode to burn, I make sure I decode to wav format, and in a folder outside of my shared folders.

Your first interaction with an Op may have been on the business end of their virtual steel-toed boot kicking your virtual arse out of the hub. That is not what the Ops are meant to do.

Ops are here to perform various duties, some of these duties you may see on a daily basis and others you may never see. No matter what duties we are performing, the main goal of an Op is to make your experience here at Echoes a safe and enjoyable one. Whether its

1. Keeping the spammers out of the hub (some do seem to slip through from time to time).
2. Teaching new members how to download and share.
3. Checking for official releases.
4. Creating contests for everyone to participate in.
5. Patrolling to keep MP3s out of the Hub.
6. Ensuring everyone shares what they download and maintains a fresh share.
7. Offering technical support to anyone who has problems.

No matter what it is that we do, our first intention is not to kick a person but to help them find their way.

One of the ways you can help is to respond to a Private Message (PM) As soon as possible from everyone as soon as possible. You do this by always checking your tabs at the bottom of the software for the ones that are BOLD. If there is an issue we need to contact you about, we will PM you directly so be expecting these tabs to turn bold.

Nothing angers an Op more than to be ignored when they are trying to help you. That will get you kicked faster than a single MP3 file in your share. And if multiple Ops PM you, please make sure you let one of them know to let the other Ops know you contacted someone, believe it or not, we do communicate to each other about how we are working with people.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it is a two way street, if you have an issue with a show, an issue with another member, a question, or any little conundrum related to the hub, remember to ask an Op. Thats what we are here for, to help you no matter what.

How to Avoid the Steel Toe Hitting The Arse

1. Follow the rules of the hub.
2. If you get kicked, check your tabs below and correct the reason for the kick and come back to the hub.
3. If you do not understand the reason, come back to the hub and PM the Op that kicked you. If they do not reply, contact another Op that you are comfortable with so they can help you. The issue needs to be corrected as soon as possible.
Remember that a kick is not a ban; you will always be allowed back into the hub after you have been kicked. If you think it is for the wrong reasons, contact an Op you are comfortable speaking with and reason with them. Communication is the key.

At The International Echoes Hub, our intention is to create a safe, harmonious, sharing atmosphere for all that choose to visit. Remember to share forward!

Dont get angry, talk it over and find out whats going on. The Echoes Hub is plenty big enough for all of us.

Hi Folks:

First of all I would like to say thanks to Marooned and all the hard work he has done to re-create the Bluegrass Hub. This has been a labor of love for him I know, and each one of you has helped to make the hub what it has become.

This crazy love affair we all have for the tunes and the bands-- groups and individuals, that see the benefit in the music trading and sharing world-- has brought us all together from all over the world. And, that cant be all bad.

Now we over in the Bluegrass Hub have a fine hub to work with thanks to the many hours of hard work and time that Marooned and a lot of you here in the Echoes hub have helped create, as well as help from many other people and their patience while we had outages. Building one of these things is not easy, at least for me. But it is like having a new house and I hope the house continues to grow.

If you look at the Message Of The Day (MOTD) welcome for the Bluegrass Hub it says "Unified Lossless Network". It also says we are sisters to The International Echoes Hub and the Bootleg Bunker; I hope this continues to grow to include many other community minded Lossless Hubs.

Each hub you may frequent is different. They all have different ways of operating and how they run, and the kinds or types of music their users share. So, as hubs we are each one of us unique in how we are and each hub has its own personality, but it is good to see us come together in a unified manner. Competition is ok in the business world, but were talking about something here that touches the soul. Friendships and Music. In my opinion these are territories where there should be no competition.

So, enough of that-- Just know that I am very thankful for all of the help that was received by the Bluegrass Hub and for the help of Friends.

Note: As a general rule, The International Echoes Hub free-trades unofficial, lossless recordings. We are very proud of the efforts extended by the tapers who used whatever device they had available to obtain some live footage and share with those who could not attend the concerts. A round of applause go out to each and everyone of you.
- Marooned

Where do all these recordings come from anyways? Tapers! That elusive breed of concert leprechauns that magically elude security goons to bring us all their audio gold. And many of these imps can be found at here at the hub. If you've ever wondered how they do it, what equipment they use, or where to find the best deals for gear, there's always a few tapers lurking around.

Strike up a conversation in main chat of the hub and you're sure to flush out a few who are more than happy to tell their stories and tease you with their secrets. Who knows, you might just get the itch and decide to bring some of your own gold back to the hub. - Mooner
