Echoes Hub Newsletter 2007 - Volume III - Edition III - May 12th, 2007

Excerpt from Brain Damage Magazine...

Held at the Barbican Hall in the heart of the city of London, it featured an array of Syd's fans and colleagues, performing a healthy chunk of his back catalogue. Amongst these, were Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, between them performing three songs in honour of their old bandmate. Profits from the concert were donated to the mental health charity SANE, nominated by the Barrett family (who were represented at the show by Ian, his cousin).

Kicking off things with a playback of Blind Boy Fuller, the middle of the three screens revealed the sleeve notes which gave rise to the name "Pink Floyd". From that point on, the screens were used to full effect - either showing footage of Syd in performance or in interview, or as the backdrop for the lightshow performed by the same people who, some 40 years ago, provided the psychedelic projections at UFO.

Below, we've posted the full setlist, along with the various performers responsible. Each performer clearly had a love and respect for the man, and each song was tackled in a special way. Thought had clearly gone into the approach to each song, and some of the biggest applause came for the more unusual treatments on offer.

Some of the key performances included the stunning rendition of Chapter 24, the blistering Astronomy Domine, and the jaunty Word Song. Having a choir made an interesting change, and worded incredibly well. Nick Laird-Clowes, More...

A few months back, I came up with the idea about having an OP's pick of the week and thought that it might be cool to have all of the Moderators select their favorite boots and make it a high priority to other traders who also would like to listen to these shows based on our recommendations.

What does this mean? This means you don't have to wait in queue for these shows, just request them from any Moderator. A slot will be auto-granted right away. This will help circulate some of the best shows out there and help our newest members start off with a great list. As announced in last month's edition of the Echoes Hub newsletter, Roger Waters is still touring and will return to North America. Once again, we have been blessed with a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of the legend himself.

In September 2006, the venue was Mansfield Massachusetts - An impromptu meeting that was organized quite efficiently and the result was seven Echoes Hub Members who met and spent a magical evening truly enjoying each other's company and all in the presence of Roger Waters!

Now, Roger is inviting and inciting Echoes Hub to rise and unite once again!

Check out the list below and send a private message to Cygnals telling him to add your name to the venue(s) you will be going to. Let's see if we can get Hub Members to meet up at the various venues and see how many Echoes Hub members will acquire tickets over the next few months.

A College in Leeds has paid tribute to a world-famous British band who wrote one of their biggest hits under its roof.

Everybody’s heard of them and most people know their music, so it was with great pleasure that on Friday 27th April, Leeds College of Technology paid tribute to Pink Floyd, one of the greatest British groups of the twentieth century.

Back in May 1967, when most of the band were still a little wet behind the ears, they came to play a gig at the college, then known as Kitson College, for the people of Leeds.

Prior to this performance, and with another gig planned for two weeks later, former front man Syd Barrett took the opportunity to pen some lyrics for a new song. Later, with the performance finished and the instruments still plugged in and ready to go, the band decided to finish the track, now known as the super-hit, See Emily Play.

In recognition of this unique event, Pink Floyd tribute act Breathe were on hand to refresh a few old memories and educate some of the younger ones with their special rendition of the hit song.

This was followed by a ceremonial unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Principal, Peter Ryder who, speaking at the event said... "It is with great pleasure that we are able to celebrate our association with the legendary Pink Floyd here today. We hope that via this commemorative plaque, their name and music will live on through our current, and future, students".

FOUR decades since the release of their debut single, there's still hope for that long-awaited Pink Floyd reunion. But the billing of bassist Roger Waters' current world tour - now in its eleventh month - as an evening with "Pink Floyd Creative Genius Roger Waters" is typically antagonistic towards his former partner David Gilmour.

Reunion or no, fans are spoilt for choice at the moment, with celebrated tribute band The Australian Pink Floyd Show and Waters both visiting Manchester within a month. But there was no competition at the weigh-in, with Waters packing the venue on a promise to play 1973's celebrated Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety.

His first set took us through the Pink Floyd back catalogue in loosely themed sections, highlights of which included a soaring Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Waters' infrequent solo work was represented too, and a set piece from 1992' Amused To Death delivered one of many big thrills.

Leading in from the Falklands War protest Fletcher Memorial Home, Perfect Sense cranked up the drama with some great props - an inflatable astronaut soaring towards the stage and a huge explosion timed to coincide with the song's apocalyptic climax.

Protest

The anti-war sentiment was explored further on recent song Leaving Beirut, a vitriolic protest against the war in Iraq that was too ham-fisted with its message to have any real impact. But its sentiments were a major theme of the show: anti-Bush slogans appeared everywhere – even on the ubiquitous flying pig.

An awkward singer, Waters is not prime frontman material, but he held his own against a heavy hitting backing band that included session ace Andy Fairweather-Low and soul singer PP Arnold.

Their chops were evident in the second set, which struck a perfect balance between respectfully reproducing Dark Side Of The Moon and amping-up the dynamics for the arena stage. On The Run was bigger and more frantic on record by virtue of the cacophonous, custom-built quadraphonic sound system.

Elsewhere, vocalist Carol Kenyon added her own twists to the celebrated climax of the Great Gig In The Sky. The set ended in spectacular style when lasers above the stage connected to form the prism from the album's iconic artwork.

The crowd were in rapture, but there was more: a sucker punch encore of Another Brick In The Wall and Comfortably Numb.

It was the end of a breathtaking evening, and a dream come true for Floyd fans. That "creative genius" line suddenly didn't look too cocky.

Note: As a general rule, The International Echoes Hub free-trades unofficial, lossless recordings. We are very proud of the efforts extended by the tapers who used whatever device they had available to obtain some live footage and share with those who could not attend the concerts. A round of applause go out to each and everyone of you.
- Marooned

Where do all these recordings come from anyways? Tapers! That elusive breed of concert leprechauns that magically elude security goons to bring us all their audio gold. And many of these imps can be found at here at the hub. If you've ever wondered how they do it, what equipment they use, or where to find the best deals for gear, there's always a few tapers lurking around.

Strike up a conversation in main chat of the hub and you're sure to flush out a few who are more than happy to tell their stories and tease you with their secrets. Who knows, you might just get the itch and decide to bring some of your own gold back to the hub. - Mooner
