Notes: This is the first recorder I've found for this gig, sound quality
is truly nice at the beginning (EX-EX+) then some problems with the
volume levels occurred as it seems and it gets distorted from Sorrw till
the Dogs of War, On The Turning Away has some changes of volume during
the song but souns pretty clean. On the second set , from Money on all
sounds as less amplified, like more distant, but still sounds good. Here
below there are notes from the taper who transferred the original master
cassettes to CD. With many thanks to K!
Notes from the taper:
10/15/87 Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT
- TDK HX-S 90 minute cassettes
Taped on Sony D-3 Walkman using stock external stereo mic
Seat: Section 2, Row F,
seat 11: I was on the floor within the 1st three sections, middle
section, left side of center. In other words, I was maybe 5 or 8 seats
left of dead center, and about 6 rows back. I actually had tix for
Hartford on 10/14/87 as well, but sold them when I discovered the shows
to be nearly identical night after night.
Notes: Side A start is
clean, but a little distorted. I tweaked the levels around four times
during Shine On. I have done some processing to even them out, but they
are still not perfect. I was unwilling to give you the straight transfer
on this, as the level swings were too drastic. At 4:15 in track 1 you
will hear some minor dialogue. I had asked the guys seated next to me to
keep it down for the tape before the show started, and they agreed. You
can hear how their tune changed here. There is a cut between Shine On &
Signs of Life. Can't remember why. Terminal Frost cuts off at the end of
side A. Actually, this really was not my night. I then lost all of A New
Machine 2. Sorrow starts off fine, but 5:08 into it I bumped the volume
control, and thus the remainder of Sorrow and all of Dogs Of War are
badly distorted. I have included them on the CD, but beware: they sound
really bad! You have been warned! I had more level issues in Turning,
but I have corrected them. See if you can guess where they were! Side B
starts clean, and the flip only loses a little jangling from the early
Money sound EFX. The real problem with this recording is that
there was a "persistent clapper" sitting next to me. He just clapped and
clapped and clapped. These claps can be pulled down one by one,
but it is painstaking. As with most of the other tapes from 87, on the
master Run Like Hell appears at the end of side B, having changed tapes
back for the final encore. I did do extensive level (volume) processing
on this recording, mostly trying to even it out. A large number of
volume clips from hand clips were processed out.
